Abbotsford MP named as Environment and Climate Change Critic

December 16, 2015

Abbotsford, BC – The Hon. Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party, today announced that Abbotsford MP Ed Fast will be joining the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet as environment critic. “I believe the team we have assembled will be the strongest Official Opposition this country has ever seen,” said Ms. Ambrose. “I am proud to lead this team of talented and respected individuals from across Canada. Together, we will ask the Government the tough questions and hold them to account.”

The appointment of Fast as environment critic comes at a time when the federal government is preparing to attend COP21, the annual United Nations Conference on Climate Change which is taking place in Paris, France beginning at the end of this month.

“I look forward to working with the new Liberal government as it seeks to promote Canada’s environmental interests over the next four years,” said Fast. “We will make it very clear that any national commitments to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions must be part of a larger global agreement that includes all major emitters, does not unfairly penalize Canada’s energy industry, and maintains Canada’s economic competitiveness.”

Fast also noted that he expects to put pressure on the new Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, to build upon the previous Conservative government’s successful record of expanding protected parkland by 50% and to address the ongoing challenges of air pollution in Canada’s major urban centres.

“I was very pleased to receive the call from Ms. Ambrose asking if I would serve in the Shadow Cabinet for the Official Opposition,” added Fast. “I look forward to my new role and to being an effective member of such a dynamic Conservative team.”
